Zain Bahrain, part of the Zain Group, has upgraded its WiMAX network across the country. Mohammed Zainalabedin, general manager of Zain Bahrain said that the WiMAX upgrade is to enable the operator to restructure its broadband and fixed WiMAX services to offer a wide range of high speed broadband voice and data services to its customers.

The upgrade is to enable Zain Bahrain customers to experience improved services in areas including live video streaming from sites such as YouTube, and downloading huge files, pictures or videos.

The upgrade is stated to put Zain customers in sync with Bahrain's e-government plans that will see more facilities such as healthcare, utilities and government service transactions go online in the coming months.

Zain, which competes with Batelco and STC's Viva in Bahrain, launched the first nationwide WiMAX network in the country to complement its mobile 3G cellular voice and data services in September 2007.

A report on GCC telecom operators' growth for the period ending September 2010 stated that there was a decline in the number of mobile subscribers for Zain Bahrain and Batelco by 3.8% and 6.5% respectively. It was stated that the third operator Viva had brought in competition to Bahrain's telco sector which saw its subscriber market share increase by around 13% during the same period.
