Chinese telecom equipment vendor Huawei claims to have produced the world's fastest quad-core smartphone, the Ascend D quad.

The Android 4.0 device, which was unveiled in Barcelona on the eve of Mobile World Congress by Richard Yu, chairman of Huawei Device, is powered by Huawei's KSV2 quad-core 1.2GHz or 1.5GHz processor, depenfing on the configuration.

Yu said that as Huawei was not well known for its smartphones, it intended to make a strong impression with the device.
The smartphone, which boasts a 4.5 inch 1280x720 HD touchscreen and a 32-bit colour graphic processor, has been designed to overcome the most common complaints that consumers have about smartphones, including speed, battery life and audio quality.

Yu said that the device uses 30% less power than similar handsets, and is also the most compact design among 4.5 inch smartphones.

"We've listed to people's top demand from smartphones: speed, long battery life, high quality visual and audio capabilities, and a compact, lightweight handset," Yu said.

The handset's Dolby 5.1 surround sound and Audience earSmart voice technology is designed to reduce background noise. Its visual specification is designed to match, with an 8-megapixel BSI rear facing camera and 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, and 1080p full HD video capture and playback capability.

The device is 8.9mm thick and 64mm in width, with a touchscreen that reaches the edge of the device.
Yu told journalists at the conference that the device would be available globally from around Q2.

Huawei said that it was still in discussions with its partners regarding the retail price of the device although Yu said it might be 15% to 20% cheaper than its peer devices.

The device will not initially support LTE. An LTE capable device will be available in Q3 to Q4, Yu said.

Huawei also made several announcements regarding its network infrastructure business at Mobile World Congress.
