Etisalat said today that it had selected US machine-to-machine communication (M2M) specialist Jasper Wireless to help it push into the M2M sector across its mobile operations.

Etisalat will use the Jasper Wireless platform to drive the entry of new categories of connected devices on its network and connect and manage embedded wireless devices.

Jasper Wireless will support Etisalat's M2M plans in markets including construction, infrastructure, retail, and oil and gas.

Essa Al Haddad, chief commercial officer, Etisalat Group, said the deal would open up new markets and create "new opportunities" for its customers.

M2M connections are expected to grow from 1 billion in 2010 to 12 billion in 2020, of which 2.3 billion will be wireless WAN connections, according to a report from Machina Research. The report also stated that mobile operators can expect to take EUR40 billion of the EUR714 billion M2M market in 2020.

Cindy Patterson, executive VP, worldwide sales, Jasper Wireless, added that markets including the Middle East present significant opportunities for mobile operators connecting industrial and consumer electronic devices.

“The freedom from a legacy fixed network, the geographical expanses that need to be covered and the constant striving to innovate and compete make it ripe for wireless M2M services," she said.
