UAE-based satellite operator, Thuraya, has appointed T. Sanford Jewett as vice president of marketing.

Sanford has more than 25 years of experience in the wireless, internet and satellite industries. His experience includes an extensive focus on introducing technology companies into new markets.

Before joining Thuraya, Jewett oversaw strategy and business development for the mobile services group at Time Warner Cable, the second biggest cable TV operator in the US with over 15 million customers.

Jewett has held management positions with several communication service providers including America Online (AOL,) Skytel, Millicom International Cellular and Reliance WiMax World.

During the start-up of Iridium Satellite in the late 1990s, Jewett worked in the marketing department, where he led the development and global marketing of the Iridium satellite pager product.

More recently, he ran operations and business development for WorldCell, a US-based service provider serving US government customers in the US, Europe, Middle East and Asia.

Jewett’s appointment follows the hiring of a number of directors earlier this year: Michael Butler, former president and COO of Inmarsat and Charles W. Moore, CEO of Lockheed Martin Global ME. The satellite operator also appointed a new CFO in October 2011.
