The UAE’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has announced that the number of registrations on the national .ae domain increased over the last six months reaching 121,320.
“This increase provides hard evidence that the prevalence of Arabic e-content is indeed rising. The significant increment indicates to the wider spread on Arabic content on the web, which is one of the main strategic goals of the UAE,” said the TRA on its press release.
The TRA reports a similar rise for registration on the ‘.emirate’??????) . The domain names are available for individuals and businesses to use them for specific periods of time. The domain name usage is subject to terms and regulations consistent with the competent services agreement set by .aeDA, the regulatory body and registry operator.
H.E. Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, Director General of TRA said: "This significant increment in the number of registrations on the national domain .ae is an indication to the quality of this service, and its amplified importance in helping registered companies reach out to a wider targeted community, according to the nature of business. We are confident that the demand rates for registration with the national domains will maintain gaining more momentum, due to its capacity to meet the users’ needs, and its role to keep Intellectual Property Rights.”
"We also look into this subject from another angle. We relate this to conserving our identity through the Arabic language, by enhancing its presence on the web as well as its position on a global level,” he added.
.aeDA, the regulatory body and registry operator for the .ae domain, a subsidiary of TRA, was created to manage the national domain. It has also established the new sector’s framework, which comprises of an administrative structure, clarifying each role, to guarantee a sustainable growth of the namespace and promoting competition by accrediting multiple .ae registered companies.
