Samsung is set to pay Apple $548 million to settle the two companies' patent dispute.

Under an agreement filed in court records last week, Samsung will pay the amount to use Apple-patented technologies.

The long-running dispute began in 2011 when Apple accused Samsung of using its patented technology without permission. Apple was originally awarded $1bn for by the courts in 2012, but this was later reduced to $930m, and then ongoing legal action split the award into two, $548m for patent technology, and $382m awarded for Samsung copying Apple's product packaging.

The payment, which is due within 10 days of Samsung receiving the invoice, will not mean the end of the dispute however. A jury is due to decide on the second damages award for the packaging dispute in 2016, and with regards to the patent dispute, Samsung has said it will file additional appeals.

The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is also currently reviewing some of the patents Apple used in the court case, and has already ruled that at least one patent claimed by Apple - covering the ‘pinch to zoom' function - was invalid. Apple has appealed that decision.
