Twelve Saudis have forked out a total of $658,000 for VIP mobile numbers in a charity auction held by Virgin Mobile.

About $526,600 of the raised money will be donated to Saudi charities, the telecom said, without explaining how the rest of the money will be spent.

The most expensive number bought was 0570 000 000, auctioned for $276,000. The telecoms operator said it was the last phone number with all zeros at the end available in the kingdom.

The other 11 numbers included 0570 777 777, 0570 666 666, 0570 555 555 and 0570 070 070.

The recipient charities include the Disabled Children Association and the Charity Committee for Orphans Care, as well as other community initiatives.

It was not revealed who the successful bidders were.
