University of Sharjah has signed a MoU with UAE telco,du to be a part of the UAE 5G Innovation Gate (U5GIG), that came into being in August 2016. du is building a UAE 5G and IoT innovation lab at techno hub of DSO to test, validate, and develop 5G and IoT use cases and services. The telco will be collaborating with University of Sharjah and other members of the consortium on the research and development of the 5G systems.

Ibrahim Nassir, chief human capital and administration officer at du stressed that the establishment of the UAE as a technology development hub can only happen through collaboration between industry and academia.

He added: "Together with the UoS, we will establish an open platform for research and development to participate in the standardisation and development of 5G and IoT use cases in the UAE."

It has been said that the techno lab at DSO will see experts from both du and University of Sharjah jointly supervising graduate and under graduate programs with focus on practical research topics.

Further, du plans to offer an internship program for university students.

Prof. Maamar Bettayeb, vice chancellor for research and graduate studies, University of Sharjah believes that this MoU presents a good opportunity for collaborative research on advanced technologies.
