RED Digital Cinema has launched HYDROGEN, a smartphone with a holographic camera and display. RED said that it has started taking orders and will start shipping the device in Q1 2018.

Key features of the device include a 5.7 inch holographic display that allows users to watch multi-dimensional content shot on the camera. RED refers to this type of content as 4-view, as oppose to stereo 3D (which the display also supports). Users can watch content in 2D, 3D, VR, AR, MR all without wearing glasses.

The OS is also embedded with an H30 algorithm that converts sound into “expansive multi-dimensional audio”.

Speaking about the device on REDUser, Jannard said: “It is incredible. It is multi-view (4-view) as compared to stereo 3D (2-view). Watching shocked faces light up when people see it is really motivating. There is no good way to describe it until you see it. Hopefully we will get some skeptics eyes on it soon… then they can tell you.”

The device will be available in titanium and aluminium casing, priced at $1,595 and $1,195 respectively.
