T-Mobile added 1.245 million new customers in the second quarter of 2020, bringing its total number of subscribers to 98.3 million, and leading the firm to claim that it is now America’s second largest telco.

The claim would relegate the US’ former incumbent telco, AT&T, to third place, leaving Verizon in top spot.

T-Mobile’s recent merger with America’s fourth biggest telco, Sprint, has catapulted the firm to a position where it can now compete with Verizon and AT&T for market dominance.

“Surpassing AT&T to become #2 was a huge milestone to kick off Q2, but that was only the beginning! In our first quarter as a combined company, T-Mobile led the industry in total branded customer adds – even in a challenging environment – and there is no doubt that we are THE leading growth company in wireless,” said Mike Sievert, T-Mobile’s new CEO, in the company’s Q2 financial report.

While AT&T has not formally commented on the developments, sources at the company told US news outlets that its 92.9 million mobile subscribers and 71.8 million connected devices in the US gave it a larger customer base than T-Mobile.
