Rakuten joins open access research group to fast track open source network technology

Japanese mobile network operator, Rakuten, has formally joined the Open Invention Network, in a bid to speed up research and development of open source mobile network technologies.
The Open Invention Network is committed to facilitating freedom of action for its community members and users of Linux or open source software. The OIN already has 3,100members from across the global telecoms community.
“Rakuten will aim to contribute to OIN through collaboration with other members to promote rapid application development and further open source technology innovation,” a Rakuten spokesperson said in a statement to the press.
Rakuten already utilises open source technology in its next generation fully virtualised cloud native mobile network, which it launched in October 2019.
Rakuten claims that by using open source technology in its network, it has been able to streamline operations, reduce cost and dramatically increase the flexibility of its network management process.
Rakuten is in the process of scaling up its 5G mobile network to cover all 47 prefectures in Japan. The network will be the world’s first end to end fully virtualised cloud native 5G network.
Rakuten is currently Japan’s smallest mobile network operator, but will look to grow its subscriber base rapidly as it scales up its 5G offering throughout the year.
