African connectivity and data centre and network solutions provider MainOne and data centre supplier Minkels have announced plans to build more data centres in West Africa – expanding what is already West Africa’s largest tier III+ data centre company.

The plan is to ramp up technology penetration in the region by building three new data centre facilities in Sagamu, Nigeria, the Ghanaian capital of Accra, and Côte d’Ivoire’s capital, Abidjan. The Nigerian and Ghanaian facilities are set to open in 2019, while the Côte d’Ivoire facility is due to open in 2020.

According to MainOne CEO Funke Opeke, ICT infrastructure investments will support rapid technology proliferation in West Africa. “Given the size of its markets and status as home of some of Africa’s biggest economies, West Africa has a vantage opportunity to scale up infrastructure deployment to support digital transformation,” she explains. “Targeted investments in the region will bridge the gap in digital infrastructure and address the increasing reliance on data storage.”

Says Minkels CEO Christiaan van Terheijden: “We are very proud to be part of the digital transformation of West Africa. MainOne is a company that knows how to drive Internet use across West Africa through investments in digital infrastructure required to grow the broadband ecosystem in the region. This benefits both inhabitants as well as Internet-enabled business models across the region.”

MainOne’s data centre subsidiary, MDXi, built the region’s largest Tier III facility in 2015. Recently, work commenced on the second phase of the project, with additional investments to construct 300 additional racks at a facility in Lekki, located in Nigeria’s Lagos State.

MDXi is West Africa’s largest full-scale data centre provider, offering colocation, wholesale deployments, interconnection and cloud services. It also offers interconnections at multiple peering exchanges in Nigeria, Ghana, Amsterdam, and London.

Minkels is a knowledge-driven producer and worldwide supplier of solutions for data centre infrastructure. It is part of the brand portfolio of Legrand, a publicly traded company with worldwide sales in the low voltage installation, data network and data centre markets. Legrand operates in more than 180 countries, and had worldwide revenues of five billion euros in 2016.
