BT has announced that it will remove all data caps for its existing customers, offering unlimited broadband to its home broadband subscribers in the UK.
The move is intended to help people stay connected during the current Covid19 pandemic.
“With more of us spending time away from family, friends and work because of Coronavirus, using digital technology to stay connected has never been more important. It’s a very difficult and uncertain time for us all – and we’re constantly assessing this fast-moving situation and thinking about what more we, as a business that’s central to the UK’s digital society, can do,” said Marc Allera, CEO of BT’s Consumer division.
Allera also said that BT would be providing remote digital skills training, providing essential life skills for those people who are less confident online.
“We’re helping older people, vulnerable people and those who are less confident in their digital skills to stay in contact with family and friends, keep up to date, and get the best healthcare advice with easy to use and access information on www.bt.com/skillsfortomorrow. That includes guidance on accessing and understanding services online – such as local council, NHS and GOV.UK websites – advice on using video calling and social media and a guide to watching TV and listening to radio online,” Allera said.
In a separate statement, BT confirmed that its nationwide broadband networks had plenty of capacity to cope with the increased demand resulting from millions of people across the country choosing to work from home and self-quarantine.
“The additional load... is well within manageable limits and we have plenty of headroom for it to grow still further," BT said in an online statement.
According to an article by the BBC, current network demand is up by approximately 50 per cent as a result of the Covid19 pandemic – from 5 Tbps on an average day to 7.5 Tbps this week. BT’s highest ever recorded network demand was over 17.5 Tbps.
