Both free WiFi connectivity and other digital services are now available in Dubai taxis. This comes after the Roads and Transport Authority started the implementation of the Tech Taxi initiative.

The included digital services support the smart city drive, which also saw a recent update. It can now be used to e-hail taxis using the new Hala service which works in conjunction with Careem.

The main idea behind Tech Taxi is to provide free WiFi to all riders by enabling a connection to the WiFi UAE network. Once connected, the rider can log on to access an array of digital services. One of the most useful services bundled could be instant interpretation where it can facilitate communication in the passenger's native language with it converting to the driver's selected language on the taxi meter screen.

Furthermore, the service also helps riders track the path of their journey and share the map with his/her relatives or associates. International travellers can also benefit via the current market exchange rates for currency conversion and the ability to keep track of their travel itinerary by rating the driver's performance and capture the taxi meter screen on their smartphones.

Khaled Al Awadi, the director of transportation systems at RTA believes this initiative is the first-of-its-kind worldwide and highlights the authority's efforts to make Dubai the smartest city in the world.
